Design and Comfort
The Quest 3 arrives in a compact and minimalist box, reflecting the headset’s focus on functionality over fancy packaging. Inside the box, you will find the headset itself, pre-installed foam facial interface, touch plus controllers, power adapter, and charging cable. The Quest 3 shares a similar design with its predecessor, the Quest 2, but with some notable improvements. While the Quest 3 is 40% slimmer, it is worth mentioning that this comparison excludes the thicker facial interface. The headset’s ergonomics have been enhanced to provide a more comfortable gaming experience, and the soft cloth headstrap has been redesigned to offer a better fit without excessive pressure on the head.
One standout feature of the Quest 3 is the continuous interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, allowing users to customize the distance between the lenses according to their needs. Additionally, the depth of the facial interface can be adjusted, providing extra space for those who wear glasses. However, it is worth noting that the curved facial interface may allow some light to spill in from the nose bridge, which can be slightly distracting. The foam padding on the facial interface, while comfortable, can pose a sanitation issue as it is not removable. Meta does offer a facial interface with a silicone cover for easier cleaning at an additional cost.
Display and Visual Clarity
The Quest 3 features dual 2064 x 2208 LCD displays, offering a 30% increase in pixel density compared to the Quest 2. This upgrade results in improved visual clarity, especially noticeable in in-game HUDs, menus, and virtual browsers. The Quest 3’s optics have also been enhanced, addressing the narrow sweet spot issue present in the Quest 2. The new pancake lenses provide uniform edge clarity, reduced lens glare, and a wider field of view for better immersion. The Quest 3 supports a 120Hz refresh rate, resulting in smooth motion and a more immersive gaming experience. While the display quality is not on par with a high-resolution PC monitor, it surpasses any comparable headset currently available on the market.
Audio and Battery Life
The Quest 3’s audio system is similar to that of the Quest 2, with the speakers located away from the ears. The sound quality has been improved, with reduced distortion and increased volume. However, this design means that people around you will also hear the audio. For better noise isolation and spatial audio, users can utilize the 3.5mm audio jack to connect wired earbuds or headphones. It is important to note that wireless Bluetooth headphones may still experience perceptible lag.
In terms of battery life, the Quest 3 offers approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes to 2 hours and 12 minutes of playtime on a single charge. While this may not seem like a long duration, it is important to consider the device’s portability and the limitations of a bigger battery pack, which would increase the headset’s weight. The Quest 3 can be fully charged in approximately 2.5 hours via a USB Type-C cable.
Gaming Performance
One of the standout features of the Quest 3 is its ability to play games independently without the need for a PC or console. The device is equipped with a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, providing up to 50% more power than its predecessor. The Quest 3’s gaming performance is impressive, with no frame rate dips and flawless gameplay experienced in various games, including popular titles like Pistol Whip and Robo Recall. While many games will require optimization updates to take full advantage of the Quest 3’s resources, there are already examples, such as Red Matter 2, that showcase the device’s capabilities.
Backwards compatibility is another significant advantage of the Quest 3, as it supports the extensive library of games available for the Quest 2. Users do not need to repurchase any games they already own, providing a seamless transition to the new headset. However, it is unfortunate that the Quest 3 does not have a more compelling launch lineup of exclusive games, but there are some highly anticipated titles set to release later in the year, such as Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR and Asgard’s Wrath 2.
Mixed Reality and Controllers
A notable addition to the Quest 3 is the full-color pass-through feature, made possible by two 4-megapixel RGB cameras and a depth sensor embedded into the front of the visor. The pass-through mode offers improved clarity and true-to-life colors, creating a more immersive mixed reality experience. While there are currently limited games utilizing this technology, the potential for mixed reality gaming is promising. The Quest 3’s touch plus controllers have undergone a redesign, removing the bulky IR rings for a more ergonomic and lightweight design. The tracking precision has been improved through the use of infrared LEDs, visor cameras, and AI hand tracking technology.
