There are two ways you can go about reversing a wrongful MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) transaction. The first option is to contact the owner of the number you wrongfully sent the money to (Person To Person) and the second is to contact MTN Customer Care to assist you with the reversal.

1. Person To Person MTN Mobile Money Reversal.
In order for the Person To Person Reversal method to work, it’ll mostly be based on luck or how well you convince the person.
…so if you find contacting MTN Customer Care to be a bit slow or long, follow the steps below to get started with this method:
- In your MoMo transaction message, look for the number to which you incorrectly transferred the money.
- Call the person and tell them how much money you transferred and the number the money was transferred to. Keep calm while you talk to them and avoid acting strange to avoid raising suspicions of fraud.
- Humbly request that they check their mobile money account to see if the amount has been received.
- When they confirm it, request them to please send the money back to you. As an expression of gratitude, you can even give them a tip for the money they send.
If done correctly, the recipient of the money may return your money to you as soon as they confirm that the money was mistakenly paid to their MoMo accounts.
2. Customer Care MTN Mobile Money Reversal.
Once you realised that you’ve made a transaction to the wrong recipient, be in a hurry to contact MTN Customer Care for them to assist you with the reversal process.
To reverse your MTN Mobile Money transaction, follow the steps below:
- Call 100 (within the first 15 days of making the transaction.)
- Select your preferred language.
- Select Mobile Money from the next menu
- Select Wrongful Mobile Money Transaction
- Select “Speak to an Agent”
- Once you get connected to an Agent, explain your situation to the agent on the line.
- You’ll be asked to provide certain information such as the Original number you were sending the money to, the exact amount you sent to the wrong number, and the exact amount you wanted to send to the right recipient
- MTN would investigate the situation and send a reversal message to the person within 15 days max.
Once MTN verifies your transaction, your money will be sent back to your MoMo wallet.
